    MARK WIGMORE'S TOP 3 – WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 18th

It’s Monday and that means Senior Arts Editor Mark Wigmore shares his top picks for your arts and entertainment week ahead.

    JFL42

Comedy fans can truly gorge this week with Just for Laughs returning to the city this week. It's the 6th edition of JFL42 with an outstanding lineup scheduled. Look for Bill Burr at the Sony Centre on Friday night, with Janeane Garofalo also in town, John Mulaney, Chris Robinson, Brian Posehn and Toronto's own standup star, Chris Locke.

    TORONTO THEATRE

Toronto's major theatre companies are back in business for the 2017/2018 season, with plenty to choose from this week and next.

On the Danforth, The Coal Mine Theatre is offering the Canadian Premiere of The Aliens from Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Annie Baker. Annie's visions for theatre are always fascinating, and it will be interesting to see what Coal Mine does with this play in its intimate space. http://www.coalminetheatre.com/ for info

Also, a reminder that Cirque Du Soleil's Volta opens officially Tuesday at the Portlands. The show has introduced extreme sports into the Cirque format. You can listen to the Jazz FM91 Volta interview here: VOLTA PODCAST

Next week, Canadian Stage’s Life After opens at the Berkeley. It was written by young musical theatre maven Britta Johnson. The show was a hit at fringe last year. https://www.canadianstage.com for info and tickets.

Also, Factory Theatre returns for another selection of boundary pushing stories. The season opens next week with Anita Majumdar’s very topical Fish Eye Triology at the Bathurst and Adelaide mainstay. https://www.factorytheatre.ca
