    Music Memory - Phil Alexandre

    Tuesday, 19 January 2016 12:46

Music Memory is sponsored by the Alzheimer Society of Toronto, offering the "Music For Memory Project": a program based on the effects of music and stimulation on people with dementia, by providing them with iPods containing personalized music. For more information, visit alz.to.

This week we hear from listener Phil Alexandre.

"The first time I ever heard Jazz, I must have been 8 years old. I went to a Manteca concert at Heritage Theatre in downtown Brampton. It was their Extra Extra album.

Being brought up with oldies like the Beach Boys, this was my first taste of Jazz. We were low middle class at the time, so going out really stood out in my memory.

There was just such a freedom in the music and the people. They presented it with a really cool stage layout, making it look like a Brooklyn scene. And there was the band and voices. It was so intoxicating - the swing, the sax lead ...

'Extra Extra' by Manteca is still one of my favourite songs."
