    Bill Merritt A musician’s who’s-who planned for one of city’s best bass players

    Several of Winnipeg’s best-loved musicians and personalities have joined forces to organize, promote and perform at a Benefit concert Friday, Jan. 14, 2011 for one of the city’s most legendary musicians. Bill Merritt, one of the best bass players to ever come out of the city, has been recently diagnosed with a brain tumour after having survived cancer about 17 years ago, when he was told he only had five years to live.

    Jazz saxophone giant James Moody has died at 85usatoday.com reports:

    "Acclaimed jazz saxophonist James Moody died this afternoon of pancreatic cancer at a San Diego hospice, the San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting. He was 85 and had lived in the city for more than 20 years.

    Moody, perhaps best known for the hit "Moody's Mood for Love," was also a virtuoso flutist, band leader and composer. He came to prominence in the mid-1940s while playing in Dizzy Gillespie's all-star big band."

    PRESS RELEASE: Diverse Selection of 30 Recordings Added to Collection Residing at The GRAMMY Museum

    SANTA MONICA, Calif. (Dec. 7, 2010) — In continuing its mission to preserve and celebrate music year-round, The Recording Academy announces the newest additions to its legendary GRAMMY Hall Of Fame collection. Established by The Academy's National Trustees in 1973, the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame was created to honor recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old. Recordings are reviewed annually by a special member committee of eminent and knowledgeable professionals from all branches of the recording arts, and final approval is made by The Recording Academy Trustees. With 30 new titles, the list currently totals 881 and is displayed at The GRAMMY Museum.

    On Wednesday, December 8, 2010, it will be 30 years to the day since former Beatle, musician, and songwriter John Lennon was gunned down outside his Dakota apartment building in New York City. CNN's John Roberts hosts a new documentary about the final year of John Lennon's death called Losing Lennon: Countdown to Murder.
