Pete Turner (1934-2017)

Pete Turner, a commercial photographer whose richly saturated color images graced the covers of hundreds of jazz albums, many of which were produced by Creed Taylor at ABC-Paramount, Impulse, Verve, A&M and, most notably, CTI, died Sept. 18. WALTER BECKER (1950 - 2017)

Obituaries for guitarist Walter Becker, who died on September 3, referred to the music he created with Donald Fagen, his partner in Steely Dan, as  “jazzy,” as “sophisticated pop.” Tidy terms, perfect for limited-character exchanges (and attention spans) trafficked through social media. But, do they really cut it? Can that terse language address the impact of their efforts, the effect Steely Dan had on its dedicated followers?

Youth Big Band: 2017-2018 Auditions

Established in 2008, the JAZZ.FM91 Youth Big Band is a free educational program that provides the opportunity for selected middle and high school students to rehearse with a 20-piece big band and perform with international jazz luminaries.
