ARTS TORONTO - May 13th Edition

This Sunday from 8-9 a.m., it’s another edition of Arts Toronto with your host Mark Wigmore on JAZZ.FM91

This episode:

The 20th edition of The Power Plant fundraiser "PowerBall" is set for Thursday May 31st at the Power Plant on the Harbourfront Centre grounds. This year’s theme is Carousal, the party featuring a one-night-only carnivalesque adult funland. There will be traditional rides, a house of horrors, but refracted through the lens of contemporary art. Powerball is in support of The Power Plant, which is devoted exclusively to contemporary visual art. Director Gaetane Verna continues to present exciting and provocative exhibitions for free at the art space. She joins Mark in studio to talk about the party, contemporary art, and the role of art in culture.

And on Tuesday, The Flato Markham Theatre welcomed dignitaries, musicians and media to learn about the upcoming 2018/2019 season. Jazz.FM91 was on hand to speak with General Manager Eric Lariviere for a preview of the jazz programming you can look forward to.

And the 22nd annual Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival is underway in the city. With 200 exhibitions, openings and events during the month of May, it is a culture vulture's paradise. And at a moment where images are such a huge part of our everyday life, it’s fascinating to see what this festival celebrates within the medium of photography. Artistic Director Bonnie Rubenstein offers an overview, and a few choice picks for Contact 2018.

All that, and beautiful jazz for a Sunday morning.
