    ARTS TORONTO November 5th EDITION

This Sunday from 8-9 a.m., it’s another edition of Arts Toronto with your host Mark Wigmore on Jazz FM91

    This episode:

Over the last decade, Gregory Porter has become one of the most celebrated vocalists in the world, and one of the most successful. He’s been nominated for five Grammy Awards and has won two, including 2016’s Take Me to the Alley, and 2013’s Liquid Spirit. His latest is Nat King Cole and Me; a sensuous collection of standards from the Cole catalog. It’s a deeply personal project that shines a light on the legendary crooner who ignited Porter’s love of music. This new album also marks the first time Porter has recorded with a full 70-piece orchestra conducted by six-time Grammy-winning conductor and arranger Vince Mendoza. Gregory Porter speaks to Mark Wigmore from his home in California.

And, this week saw the debut episode of one of the most highly anticipated food reality programs to ever hit Canada, The Great Canadian Baking Show. The series found its legs in the UK some years ago. The Great British Baking Show attracted legions of fans worldwide that laughed, cried and cheered on their favorite amateur bakers. In particular, the series was noted for its emotional authenticity and sumptuous baking requests. Now we have a Canadian version, airing Wednesday nights at 8 pm on CBC Television. This maple edition sees 10 bakers from across the country compete in a series of themed culinary challenges. Like most reality show competitions, someone wins each episode, and someone leaves. The hosts, are actors and amateur baked good lovers, Julia Chan and Dan Levy. Dan is the star and creator of CBC’s Schitt’s Creek and Julia is best known for her role in Saving Hope. Both join Mark Wigmore in studio.

And, over the last 3 decades, Kurt Elling has been one of the most celebrated jazz vocalists on the world stage. Since 1995 he has released a dozen recordings which have garnered 12 Grammy nominations and a win for 2009’s Dedicated to You. His latest solo effort is The Beautiful Day, Kurt Elling Sings Christmas. In 2017, Kurt has been featured on two exciting recordings, Brian Byrne’s GoldenHair and The Passion of Charlie Parker. Kurt Elling speaks to Mark Wigmore from his home in New York City.

All that, and beautiful jazz for a Sunday morning.
