It’s Monday and that means Senior Arts Editor Mark Wigmore shares his top picks for your arts and entertainment week ahead.

    KOERNER HALL: HOLLY COLE

It was wonderful to feature Holly Cole as part of our Jazz Lives: In Canada concert in 2016. This Friday night, Holly makes her Koerner Hall debut as a headlining artist. She will be performing many of her fan favorites and some new material from her forthcoming 12th studio recording!

What a voice, but also an enduring musical spirit within the Canadian music scene. It should be noted that Holly recently received the prestigious Ella Fitzgerald Award by the Montreal Jazz Festival for “being a singer of significant talent who has had major influence in the international jazz scene.” www.RCMusic.com for tickets and timing.

    BLOOR HOT DOCS CINEMA: JANE

It was one of most talked about films at TIFF 2017, Jane is now enjoying a long run at Bloor Hot Docs Cinema. Here’s a moment from this Jane Goodall documentary

In Jane, you will live with Jane Goodall while she conducts her groundbreaking with chimpanzees. Fifty years ago, a National Geographic filmmaker was sent to join her in the Tanzanian jungle, where he captured over 140 hours of 16mm footage that was never used. Academy Award–nominated director Brett Morgen has pieced that footage together to create this award winning doc. It’s set to an orchestral score by Philip Glass. There are plenty of screenings, but on Wednesday, Andria Teather, Chief Executive Officer of The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada, will be in attendance for a post-screening Q&A at 6:30 p.m. www.HotDocsCinema.ca for tickets and timing.
